Christmas Sleep Tips for Babies and Children: How to Prepare Your Child for the Festive Season

November 30, 20253 min read

The Christmas season is magical, cosy, and full of memory-making moments - but for many parents, it also brings a fair amount of stress. With family visiting, social plans stacking up, and routines going out the window, it’s no surprise that many mums and dads worry about how the holidays will affect their little one’s sleep.

If you’re wondering how to keep your baby or toddler settled during the festive chaos, you’re not alone. Here are my expert, parent-friendly Christmas sleep tips to help you enjoy the season and protect your child’s rest.

1. Stick to a Sleep Routine (as Much as Possible)

Even with the excitement of Christmas, consistency remains your best friend. Try to keep your child’s regular bedtime and nap schedule on track. If bedtime is usually 7:30 PM, aim for around that time — even if you have guests over. Familiar rhythms help your child feel safe and calm, making it easier for them to fall asleep amidst the celebrations.

2. Create a Calm, Sleep-Friendly Space

A full house often means more noise, more lights, and more stimulation. Set up a quiet, cosy sleep environment for your baby or toddler.

  • Use white noise to soften background sounds

  • Keep the room dark

  • Bring in familiar bedding or comforters

A predictable sleep environment goes a long way in supporting restful sleep at Christmas.

3. Communicate Your Child’s Sleep Needs with Guests

Most family and friends are very understanding once they know why your child’s routine matters. Let them know when nap time and bedtime typically happen, and ask for quieter moments during those windows. It helps everyone enjoy the day - especially your little one.

4. Be Flexible… But Stay Grounded

The holiday season naturally brings a little chaos. A slightly later bedtime or a shorter nap here and there won’t undo everything. What matters is getting back on track the following day. Allow yourself some festive flexibility while keeping sleep foundations in place.

5. Protect Nap Time - It’s Essential

An overtired child finds it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep, which can lead to false starts, nighttime waking, or early mornings. If a nap is missed due to Christmas activities, try offering an earlier bedtime or a short catch-up nap later in the day.

6. Avoid Sugary Treats Close to Bedtime

Sweets are everywhere during Christmas, but sugar before bed can make winding down much harder. Try to keep sugary snacks and drinks at least an hour away from bedtime to support calmer, easier sleep.

7. Keep an Eye on Screen Time

Between festive films, family phones, and devices, screen time can creep up. Blue light stimulates the brain and can delay melatonin - the hormone that helps your child feel sleepy. Aim to avoid screens at least an hour before bedtime and swap this for calming activities instead.

8. If You’re Travelling, Take the Sleep Familiarity with You

Visiting relatives or staying away from home? Bring familiar sleep cues like a favourite blanket, sleeping bag, cuddly toy, or white-noise machine. These items help your child feel grounded and safe, making sleep smoother in a new environment.

9. Create a Calming Christmas Wind-Down Routine

A soothing bedtime routine is even more important during busy seasons. Gentle ideas include:

  • Reading a festive bedtime story

  • Singing a lullaby

  • Enjoying quiet cuddles

  • Dimming the lights to signal “night-time”

This helps your child transition from excitement to rest.

Remember: Christmas Is About Connection, Not Perfection

It’s absolutely okay to enjoy late-night family moments, take photos around the tree, and soak in the magic. A little preparation helps keep your child rested, but you are allowed to enjoy this season too.

By keeping routines steady, protecting nap times, and creating a calm sleep environment, your family can enjoy a joyful, restful Christmas.
